Google’s latest health update pulls several threads together: new hardware, a premium accessory, background health monitoring, and a much larger partner network. The announcement covers the screenless Fitbit Air, the Pixel Watch 5, and the new Fitbit Edge, described as a next-generation tracker with advanced fitness and real-time guidance. Since launching the Google Health app and Google Health Coach, the company says it has shipped more than 55 features and fixes.
A new metal band and an expanding tracker family
The new Fitbit Air Metal Mesh band is made from a flexible stainless steel weave designed to transition from workout to evening. It costs $69.99 in Champagne Gold or Polished Silver. A bundle pairing the champagne gold band with an Obsidian Fitbit Air is $149.99, available at Target and the Google Store. The wearable lineup now spans the screenless Air, the Pixel Watch 5, and the newly introduced Fitbit Edge.
Health Guardian watches for subtle shifts
Health Guardian is a suite of health and safety tools rolling out to Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge for Google Health Premium subscribers later this month. Users can set up blood pressure trends and insulin resistance trends in the Google Health app. If monthly wear requirements are met, they receive a report at the beginning of each month to spot lifestyle changes early. The Coach can then translate pattern shifts, adapt fitness plans, and offer guidance or context to share with a doctor.
Smarter automatic activity detection and deeper partnerships
Automatic activity tracking has been upgraded. It now recognizes more than 100 activities, up from 10, adding strength training, swimming, and racket and team sports. Google says contextual reasoning — drawing on workout routines, historical data, manual edits, and location with permission — makes detections nearly 2x more accurate and cuts missed workouts by more than half. Workouts that clear a default 15-minute threshold with sustained elevated heart rate are logged automatically, and summaries usually arrive within 30 minutes. The feature works across Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, and Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5.
Partnerships are also expanding:
- Flo Health sync for cycle data begins early next year, with deeper insights and joint clinical research into women’s health.
- Abbott’s Lingo over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor will connect for U.S. users, unifying glucose, meals, workouts, and sleep.
- MyFitnessPal integration now lets Premium users share detailed food-specific logs with Google Health, while non-premium users can share daily meal logs.
- Function Health will allow U.S. users to import clinical lab results starting later this fall.
With these updates, Google is moving its health stack from a collection of sensors into a background reasoning layer that helps interpret what the body did and what it means.
