From chatbot to inbox: Gemini Live arrives in productivity apps
Google is embedding its conversational voice mode directly into Gmail, Docs, and Keep, turning three of its most-used productivity tools into hands-free assistants. The company calls these modes Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live — and they are rolling out globally in English starting today, according to The Verge.
The idea is to make Gemini Live's natural back-and-forth voice interaction available right where people already manage email, notes, and documents. Instead of opening a separate chatbot, you can ask your inbox a question, dictate a note, or describe a document you need, and the assistant responds in real time.
What each Live mode does
- Gmail Live is built for retrieving details from your inbox without scrolling through threads. Google's example: ask “when is my kid’s next school event?” and the assistant will pull the relevant email, summarize it verbally, and show source links in the on-screen transcript. You can interrupt mid-sentence, ask follow-ups, and pivot topics without restarting.
- Docs Live helps format ideas into structured documents. You can ask it to summarize a long doc, turn it into a business proposal, or draft from a conversational description. With permission, it can also draw context from your Gmail, Drive, Chat, and the web.
- Keep Live transcribes natural speech and contextualizes notes automatically. Say “add ingredients for pesto to my shopping list” and Gemini interprets that into a structured list item without requiring rigid phrasing.
These Live modes were previewed at Google I/O in May, and now they are moving from demo to device.
Plan gating and platform splits
The rollout is not uniform. Google is tying the features to its paid AI subscriptions, and there are some platform limitations worth noting:
- Gmail Live is available on iOS and Android for users on Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans.
- Docs Live and Keep Live are coming to AI Pro and Ultra plans only.
- Keep Live is Android only, while Docs Live works on both iOS and Android.
- Google says all three are “coming soon” for Workspace business customers.
For now, the most capable voice experience sits behind the higher tiers, and Keep's voice transcription is unavailable on iPhone. Still, this is a meaningful step: Google is moving Gemini from a separate chat window into the core layers of email, documents, and notes. The result is a more portable AI — one that listens while you're on the move, retrieves what you actually need, and turns spoken language into structured work.
