Auganix reports that Japanese AR display developer Cellid has signed a business partnership with Megane Top, one of Japan's major eyewear retailers, to bring AR glasses to market under Megane Top's own brand. Rather than treating the product as a niche tech toy, the two companies plan to sell it through Megane Top's nationwide network, including the Megane Ichiba chain — a retail channel that already reaches everyday eyeglass buyers.
A Two-Industry Partnership for Everyday AR
The collaboration splits responsibilities along familiar lines. Cellid will lead development, contributing its optical see-through display technology, spatial recognition engines, hardware design, and overall product architecture. Megane Top brings decades of eyeglass product development, comfort and fit expertise, and a store network that can put the glasses in front of customers who might never visit a specialty electronics shop. According to the announcement, the companies will work together "across every stage of bringing the AR glasses to market, from product development through market expansion."
Megane Top president Masahiro Tomizawa framed the move as shifting AR glasses "beyond a product for early adopters and into eyewear that can be used by a broader range of people in their everyday lives." That positioning matters: pairing an AR display specialist with a mainstream optical retailer signals a distribution path that could normalize AI-enabled glasses as ordinary accessories.
What the Linse Display Promises
The jointly developed prototype, called the Linse Display, appears on a Megane Ichiba product page. Images show a device still in development, so final hardware and on-screen interface may change. The page lists five core functions:
- Navigation — turn-by-turn directions in the wearer's field of view
- Notifications — glanceable alerts without pulling out a phone
- Foreign-language translation — on-screen translation for conversations or signs
- AI Notes — meeting minutes and AI-generated summaries
- Entertainment — including music playback
For portable AI, the most interesting items are translation and AI Notes. Those features rely on cloud or on-device language models and speech processing to deliver real-time assistance through a lightweight glasses form factor. If these functions work well in a retail-friendly product, they could make always-available AI feel less like a gadget and more like a pair of glasses.
From Crowdfunding to Mainstream Eyewear Shelves
Preorders for the Linse Display will open on the GREEN FUNDING crowdfunding platform on October 23, 2026, with sales through Megane Top stores expected after the campaign ends. Cellid says it will continue R&D to make AR glasses "smaller, more capable, and more comfortable to wear" while improving mass-production technologies.
That crowdfunding-first approach indicates the glasses are still in an early phase. The announcement does not reveal final specifications, battery life, price, or privacy safeguards. Still, the retail partnership structure — a display/optics company plus a nationwide eyewear chain — is a signal worth watching. If Megane Top can present AR glasses as comfortable everyday eyewear with practical AI features, it may move the category from tech early adopters to the general optical market.
