Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 add ambient AI memory without recording audio

Apple's latest watches introduce Live Rewind, Siri Recap, and Sound Recognition, bringing AI conversation memory to the wrist while heart-rate tracking jumps to readings every five seconds.

Audio Intelligence puts a conversation memory on your wrist

Apple's new wearables are not a radical industrial redesign, but TechCrunch notes they arrive with a noteworthy software push aimed squarely at the dedicated AI wearables that have been gaining attention. The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 introduce what Apple calls Audio Intelligence, a trio of ambient listening features designed to capture, summarize, and recall daily moments.

  • Live Rewind lets you double-press the Digital Crown to see the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as a text snippet. You can ask Siri about that transcript or save it to the new Siri app for later.
  • Siri Recap uses ambient listening to take high-level notes from meetings or parent-teacher conferences. After the conversation, Apple Intelligence automatically generates a title and key points in the Siri app.
  • Sound Recognition listens for sirens, alarms, doorbells, and a crying baby, aimed at people who are hard of hearing.

Apple says these features do not create or store audio recordings, which should address some privacy concerns even if the idea of an always-listening watch remains contentious.

Heart-rate data gets 60 times denser, plus readiness scores

The health sensor stack is where the hardware changes are most visible. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 use an increased electrode surface area for better skin contact during ECG readings. Redesigned photodiodes are arranged in a ring to capture light more efficiently, and more power-efficient green LEDs enable accurate heart-rate measurements all day, even during motion.

That translates into background heart-rate readings every five seconds, which TechCrunch says is 60 times more frequent than before. Continuous heart-rate data at this cadence is a strong indicator of overall health and should improve detection of anomalies.

  • Readiness scores each morning analyze recent activity, vitals, and sleep into a single number indicating how prepared your body is for the day.
  • Health Age compares your key metrics, including VO2 max and sleep, with your actual age to show whether you are aging better or worse than your chronological age.

These additions pull Apple Watch closer to smart rings and dedicated recovery platforms, but in a more familiar wrist form factor.

Pricing keeps the lineup accessible

The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399, while the Apple Watch Ultra 4 costs $499, according to TechCrunch. That is a modest gap between the standard and rugged models, especially given the Ultra 4's larger battery and extra features for outdoor use.
